Executive Summary

Cloudei played a critical role in the project's success by designing and executing a serverless architecture on Google Cloud Run and a private hybrid database ecosystem via Serverless VPC Connectors to bridge Sefas App's transition from CodeIgniter 3 (MySQL 5.7) to Laravel 11 (MySQL 8.0). Through this collaboration, the team achieved a complete workload migration that is 100% secure from public internet exposure, automated CI/CD pipelines to deliver software updates in under 5 minutes, and guaranteed infrastructure resilience with an estimated 99.99% uptime utilizing Cloud SQL Zonal High Availability features.

About The Customer
Sefas Group

PT SEFAS PELINDOTAMA is a leading authorized distributor of Shell Lubricants in Indonesia, primarily serving the industrial, mining, and construction sectors. Guided by the corporate motto "Your Business Our Service", the company is committed to providing integrated lubrication solutions supported by an extensive distribution network across Jakarta and Kalimantan to deliver reliable operational services for its business partners.

The Challenges

In an effort to improve cost efficiency, system reliability, and scalability, PT SEFAS PELINDOTAMA faced several significant infrastructure constraints and technological conflicts.

The primary complexity of this project centered on migrating all daily operational workloads to a brand-new ecosystem while simultaneously bridging a stark generational gap in software architecture:

01

VPS Physical Limitations

The legacy local cloud infrastructure lacked scalability and posed a high risk of downtime or system failure during peak surges in daily operational data traffic.

02

Programming Language Gap

There was massive transition complexity and functional incompatibility risks involved in overhauling legacy application codebases from CodeIgniter 3 (PHP 5.6) up to a modern Laravel 11 (PHP 8.3) framework.

03

Database Version Conflict

The legacy application modules (CI3) strictly required a MySQL 5.7 engine to ensure native functions and reserved words ran smoothly, whereas the new modules (Laravel 11) demanded MySQL 8.0 for optimum performance and High Availability (HA) capabilities.

The Solution

This architectural solution completely migrates the workload to Google Cloud Run (auto-scaling) by cleanly separating the Production environment (new Laravel system) and the Development environment (legacy system). Secure hybrid data synchronization is then ensured by uniting the MySQL 5.7 and MySQL 8.0 instances into a single private network using a Serverless VPC Connector.

Serverless Containerization

Complete workload migration to Google Cloud Run with automated scaling capabilities (auto-scaling).

Dual-Environment System

A clean separation of working environments; the new Laravel code runs in the Production (Prod) environment, while the legacy system is isolated within the Development (Dev) environment.

Shared DB Environment (Private VPC)

Unites MySQL 5.7 and MySQL 8.0 instances within a single private network perimeter using a Serverless VPC Connector to ensure secure data synchronization.

The Result

The collaboration with Cloudei successfully transformed Sefas App's entire infrastructure, mitigating the critical downtime risks caused by legacy VPS limitations and an operating system that had reached its end-of-life cycle. By pivoting from a lift-and-shift model to a serverless architecture built on Google Cloud Run with a stateless system design, Sefas can now channel its resources entirely into system development without the burden of manual infrastructure management. The clean separation of environments—Production, Development, and Shared Platform—not only prevents performance disruptions from testing activities but also drastically boosts user confidence in system reliability. Thanks to environment standardization using Docker, the local and production ecosystems now run identically, ensuring a more consistent development process.

From an operational standpoint, transitioning to a pay-as-you-go pricing model delivers far more optimal cost efficiency, as Sefas no longer needs to pay for VM capacity that runs nonstop even during zero-traffic periods. This modernization has also fundamentally reshaped how the IT team works by implementing a "Fail Fast, Fix Fast" approach. The process of releasing updates and resolving bugs, which was previously handled manually via FileZilla, has been fully automated through an instant CI/CD pipeline featuring rapid rollback capabilities via the Google Cloud Console. Furthermore, incident management has become much more proactive; equipped with Cloud Logging and automated Uptime Checks on a single, centralized dashboard, the IT team can instantly detect, trace, and mitigate potential disruptions even before users notice them.

On the security pillar, the new architecture implements Zero-Trust principles using Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP), seamlessly integrating user access validation with the organization's Google Workspace accounts. This milestone grants staff the flexibility to work securely from anywhere without the bottlenecks of conventional VPN connections, while streamlining account maintenance for the IT team. The security posture for corporate sensitive data has also been significantly elevated through a combination of Private IPs for Cloud SQL and credential centralization in Google Secret Manager to minimize source code exposure risks. With all sensitive data now encrypted, centralized, and strictly controlled, this robust architecture engineered by GCP and Cloudei not only accelerates Sefas's future innovations but also lays a rock-solid foundation that simplifies upcoming compliance audits, such as ISO certifications.

"Cloudei was an outstanding implementation partner for Sefas Group's GCP migration. From project kickoff through go-live, their team stayed closely engaged - proactively flagging risks, providing solutions tailoring to our needs and adjusting quickly whenever priorities shifted. That level of hands-on support made a technically complex migration feel manageable and we'd gladly work with them again."
Kezia Roesli Director - Sefas Group
"Technical migrations are rarely straightforward, but the success of the Sefas Group project was rooted in constant communication and agility. By staying closely aligned with their shifting priorities and proactively managing risks, we were able to deliver a tailored GCP environment that met their specific needs. We're thrilled to have earned their trust and are excited to see them continue to leverage their new cloud infrastructure."
